Instead of darkness, Markus saw fire.

And images of a world—once so familiar—razed to the ground by a monstrous horde that controlled land, air, and sea. Bodies littered the ravaged streets, cities burned—and still, the vast forces of Avalon continued to pour through the dark portal at Stonehenge.

Merlin was there, cackling laughter announcing his levitating presence as sickly-green magic flowed from his fingertips. Dalia was frozen in the air next to him, entirely helpless as the wizard’s necromantic powers surrounded and started to consume her—just as they’d done to Phaendar Roher and his Magic. Markus could hear himself yelling, begging Merlin to stop, but the evil laughter grew louder. But it was eventually outdone by Dalia’s final scream, her withered body bursting into green flames that burned from the inside.

“You will watch her die, Markus.”

The visions of fire and death broke, allowing Markus to breathe again. “Get out of my head!”

The images ceased, dropping away like water on paint to restore the dark—but the sound of evil amusement prevailed. “Why so serious, Markus? If not for my interference, your precious Dalia would already be dead. I gave you strength when your body had none left to give. You should be thanking me.”

“I’ll never thank you,” Markus yelled back. “I don’t want your help.”

“You have no choice in the matter, dog,” Abaddon hissed. “Succumb to your doomed fate if that is what you wish, or save your world by discovering Merlin’s secret. Either way, you will be forced to come to me soon enough.”

“Damn you,” Markus seethed into the unblinking abyss. “Just tell me what I need to do. Tell me what I’m looking for.”

“No.”

With that, Abaddon’s voice and presence were flushed from Markus’s head, creating a vacuum where residency had been established—but not before the visions returned with a vengeance, the graphic slaughter of an entire world resuming before his helpless eyes.

The cumulative cry of billions, all screaming out with terror, stalked Markus to the waking world.
